NEED OF A SINCERE AND SUSTAINED WAR AGAINST DRUGS

The Haryana BJP leader Sonali Phogat’s death caused after being drugged has again brought into focus the malaise of the freely available drugs in the State. The drug trade in Goa has spread its tentacles very deep to every nook and corner across the State. What was earlier only in the beach belt has today spread all over in the cities, villages and even around the schools and colleges.

The drug trade has flourished with political patronage and collusion with the law enforcement authorities. It may be too late to free Goa from drugs but it may not be a mission impossible if there is a true sincere commitment and the entire police are in unison towards eradicating this menace which has now inflicted even the young generation. The destructive drug trade tsunami does not discriminate between its victims, irrespective of status or gender. However, it has the most devastating effects on the lives of the most vulnerable members of our society.

Goa was once a much sought-after tourist destination. Sadly it is today a gambling, sex trade and drug haven. This cocktail of devastating vices has led our State into being transformed into a Crime destination that decent high net worth tourists now avoid like the plague. Mere weasel words to deal with this soaring menace by Government and Police officials after a high profile drug death is not enough. Actions speak louder than words!
