The BJP in Goa had promised Zero Tolerance to Corruption but has conveniently despite the soaring levels of corruption kept the State without the much needed Lokayukta. This has been the systematic design of the BJP in its States and at the Centre to drag filling in these and similar posts, lest they become an albatross and hindrance for their ruling dispensations.
There is a misconception that a retired Supreme Court or High Court Judge would be better suited to be a Lokayukta. We have seen the disastrous performance by retired Supreme Court Judge Sudershan Reddy who within months abandoned the Goa Lokayukta’s Chair in a huff. Less said the better on the lackluster term of Mohit Shah as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
If the Government is infact serious on arresting corruption it should amend the Goa Lokayukta Act to enable the appointment of even a District Judge to the post.
South Goa Principal District Judge Nutan Sardessai who has been a Judge for 21 long years and has worked in both districts has all it takes to be a formidable Lokayukta. The iron lady is known to be a no nonsense Judge with the spine to take on the powers to be by the horn.
The Lokayukta is not just another position but is the pivotal role that needs someone with some special aptitudes to wage a war against corruption. Judge Nutan Sardessai suits the bill. But if the Government wants the current rampant corruption to only further engulf, God Save Goa.
