GOA POLICE MUST BE FREED FROM THE POLITICAL ROT

The political interference in the working of the Goa Police has reached its very hilt. During this carnival it has been all so very blatant. We have seen how permissions were being given or rejected on political diktats. The rule of law went for a toss when the police failed to use a uniform yardstick. Further the manner in which the police in Panaji acted very high-handedly with citizens silently walking with placards is absolutely condemnable. Police are guardians of law and cannot opt to be thugs to please their political bosses.

The conduct of the Goa Police is in rank contravention to the mandate of the Supreme Court which has time and again ruled that Police should be free from any political machinations whatsoever.

Sadly today the Ministers and ruling MLAs are virtually running the police stations while the police have been reduced to caged parrots. All this is an unacceptable state of affairs which cannot be allowed to go on anymore.

As rightly pointed out by the Supreme Court the duty of the Police has to be solely to the rule of law at all times. There should be a concerted effort to stem out the current political interference in the working of the Police force. Only then will we have a very professional Goa Police and the much needed good policing that our now crime ridden State desperately needs.
