The disgraceful manner in which former Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte joined the BJP in political desperation comes as no surprise. What is sickening however is the way in which the BJP so shamelessly embraced a person who till the very end hurled awful vitriolic abuses against the saffron party and at Chief Minister Pramod Sawant besides targeting and torturing its workers.
His induction ceremony was a bonanza to the people who were paid Rs 500 a head to attend. But what was highly objectionable was the shouting of political slogans within the precincts of Panaji’s sacred Mahalaxmi temple.
And Rohan Khaunte has been known for his political opportunism. In 2017 he was elected as an Independent MLA in Porvorim with the official support of the Congress. But within hours of being elected in that midnight drama he most unethically supported the formation of a BJP led government obviously for the sake of Power and whatever else was doled to him. What was disgusting was to hear him have the audacity of most deviously claiming that he was not elected with the support of the Congress.
Truth and integrity must always be the overriding characteristics of those who are privileged and elected to serve their constituents. Repaying that trust by being accountable and acting responsibly with uprightness is crucial.
At the ensuing Assembly elections may Goa elect 40 worthy MLAs leaving no room for any Political thugs to creep in.
