The soaring crime levels is a very clear indicator that Goa has become a very unsafe destination. Due to lack of foresight by successive governments, Goa once the Paradise of the East is today a drug, gambling, prostitution and crime den. And the situation will only further deteriorate as long as politicians control and manipulate the functioning of Police Stations.
The onus is on the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure that the entire police machinery upholds the rule of law at all times and is free from political manipulation. The current DGP has been a disaster in ensuring this. We will now have a new DGP who is due to retire in ten months.
We have some very competent persons at all ranks within the Goa Police but it is those black sheep that put the entire police force to disgrace and disrepute. Unless these criminal minded officers who have creeped in are flushed out of the system, maintaining law and order may be a far dream.
Currently the process is underway to recruit another 145 Police Sub Inspectors and 857 constables. The Lokayukta must investigate if the going rate for the post of PSI is upto 40 lakhs and for a constable upto 8 lakhs.
