THOSE ELECTED MUST PERFORM OR PERISH

Those elected at all levels of government must be accountable to the people. The recent announcement on performance reports by Ministers and departments is old wine in a new bottle. This same promise was made in the Goa BJP’s manifesto in 2012 but for a decade it has remained as one of those many unfulfilled election promises.

The government must be rapped for the fake promises made. The recent broken promise on gas cylinders is so very blatant. After clearly promising three free cylinders annually for every household, the government has gone back on its word and now says only those below poverty will be eligible. The perennial potholes galore on our dangerous roads and the craters on the Atal Setu as a result of corrupt and shoddy workmanship which to date have gone unpunished and various other scams are examples of Government’s all talk and no action. Less said the better on the devious and crafty manner in which the Panchayat Polls are sought to be postponed. It is all a well orchestrated stage managed drama.

We in fact need to have a mechanism in place to also assess the performance of all MLAs including the ones in the Opposition. The Goa MLAs being paid handsomely and with perks galore must perform as outstanding legislators to the utmost satisfaction of their constituents and act as role models to the public.

Our government should heed the sound advice of the late Harold Geneen, a great American business leader who said ‘It is an immutable law in business that words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises – but only performance is reality!
