Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s claim that the acquittal of Tarun Tejpal was being challenged because injustice was done to a lady is laughable. Since when has he become concerned about the plight of abused women?
In May 2019 during the campaign for the Panaji Assembly by-election the Chief Minister had vociferously and publicly cautioned the people of Panaji and Ribandar by repeatedly at all election meetings, roaring “Babush Monserrate is facing Rape charges and if a Rapist becomes your MLA, the ladies and girls will be so very unsafe”.
In less than two months it was the same Pramod Sawant welcoming with a very warm embrace the very same Babush Monserrate into the BJP. And hopefully the Mahilas in the party are safe and comfortable with someone around whom their own Chief Minister himself had branded as an alleged rapist.
It’s high time that Pramod Sawant realizes that Goans are not dumb and that our State is amongst one of the most literate ones and will not be fooled by this cheap politriks. Playing politics with the rule of law and justice and for not practising what he preaches, the people will judge the CM accordingly.
For politicians facing criminal charges even taking a dip in the Ganges will bring no solace but joining the BJP cleanses and absolves them of their every sin while putting an end to all their legal woes. Sinners overnight become Saints.
A very sad state of affairs in our great country, once acclaimed as the world’s largest democracy, where no man was above the law and where justice was not only done but seen to be done.
