It was interesting to watch and participate in the very well and meticulously organised Portugal Elections underway today.
The elections being held with ballot papers leaves no room for any speculation of fraud or political mischief. Casting your vote at the polling booth was so smooth with no queues anywhere. No police patrolling and not even a police constable in sight anywhere. No dry days with polling day just another normal day. At bars and restaurants even next to the polling booths its life as usual. At the polling booths, no special queue for the disabled and senior citizens with people respectfully making way for the sick and elderly. Moreover, no supporters of political parties jostling with voters outside the polling booths. Everything so orderly and in absolute decorum.
Just over 10 million voters are eligible to elect their representatives for the 230 Parliamentary seats. Counting of votes will begin as soon as polls close at 7 pm this evening. Portugal must be hoping for a clear mandate ending the political uncertainty that has financially burdened the nation necessitating three general elections in as many years.
Yesterday Portugal witnessed the high decibel Sporting v/s Benfica football pitch, let us see what is in store tonight and if this political match ends up accomplishing the much needed political stability that the Nation so desperately requires.
