POLITICAL TALE OF THE TWO GRANDFATHERS

When the new Goa Legislative Assembly is constituted next month, two very senior legislators will be missing. Both these Grandfathers have faded away as legislators without grace and of their own making.

Luizinho Faleiro chose to secure a new dawn for him by grabbing a berth in the Rajya Sabha as a comfy retirement nest rather than for the common good. Nothing more needs to be said on how he abandoned the Congress party which gave him his undeserved status, and which ensured his rise from sheer rags to great riches. More importantly he lacked integrity. For while he participated in crucial Congress meetings, he was negotiating his way to the Trinamool Congress, his new abode for the greed of the rupee and lust for power.

Pratapsingh Rane could have also called it a day in a more dignified manner after the party gave him all the positions of power. It was absolutely improper for him to keep his party and people guessing till the very end whether he was going to contest. He proved very ungrateful to the Congress which trusted him to the very hilt. By his crafty conduct Pratapsingh Rane instantly reduced to ashes his 50 years as legislator by letting down the party and the people that nurtured his entire political journey. Accepting that unconstitutional Lifetime cabinet status only further exposed his true colours.

Pratapsingh Rane and Luizinho Faleiro will be remembered as Kings who were fortunate to have had good times but not as good role models for those venturing into Politics which today has anyway ended up being a personal investment and the Scoundrel’s last resort, and akin to the world’s oldest profession.

With all their experience and luck, they should have lived up to the famous saying ‘Legacy is not what I did for myself. It’s what I am doing for the next generation’. They should have taken the advice of Thomas Monson, an American religious leader who said ‘Let us not only remember the past and its required sacrifice, let us also remember that we are responsible to build a legacy for the generations which follow us’. Sadly, these two haven’t left a legacy that is worth following!
