MAY OUR GOA BE SAVED FROM POLITICAL THUGS AND RUFFIANS

The sex scandal revelation against Urban Development Minister Milind Naik is a very serious issue warranting that he is immediately sacked from the cabinet.

The BJP while in the Opposition had forced the resignation of then Minister Dayanand Narvekar after he was charge-sheeted. But the party has failed to walk its talk while charge-sheeted Ministers Mauvin Godinho and Jennifer Monserrate continue in the cabinet and  Babush Monserrate with at least two serious criminal cases against him merrily ploughing galore as Chairman of Greater Panaji Planning and Development Authority.

In a landmark Judgment the Supreme Court in 2014 observed that criminalization of politics destroyed people’s faith in democracy and persons howsoever high cannot be exempted from the rule of law. It said that constitutional morality, good governance and constitutional trust expected good sense not to recommend any person with criminal charges from being appointed as a Minister.

The Court also said: “A democratic republic polity hopes and aspires to be governed by a Government which is run by the elected representatives who do not have any involvement in criminal offences.

The corrupt and criminal minded need to be uprooted from the political spectrum for there to be a ray of hope for our polity. The Supreme Court has rightly observed that in the interest of the nation the criminal cases involving politicians must be speedily disposed. Expressing the need for decriminalization of politics, the Court exhorted the necessity to create Special fast track Courts to deal with cases against politicians.

Today on the feast of St. Francis Xavier, the Patron Saint of Goa, let us pray in a very special way that our once beautiful State is freed of  politicians involved in unlawful, immoral acts and corruption.
